RDI Intuitive Technical Blog - What is VoIP and Its Advantages

What is VoIP and Its Advantages?

VoIP is an acronym that stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Instead of using a hard-wired telephone connection, VoIP sends and delivers your phone communications over your Internet connection. Your Internet connection is usually fiber or cable. Since the average business already pays for more bandwidth than it needs, using a solution that relies on the excess bandwidth makes a lot of sense and can save a company significant telecommunications cost.

Apps vs VoIP Platforms

You may have already used VoIP. There is a high probability a significant number of calls to you were delivered using VoIP. If you have chatted with others using Skype or Facetime or Facebook Messenger, you have used it. While helpful, these applications are aimed toward users and not whole organizations. VoIP platforms aimed toward businesses have many more features and benefits.

Older Telecommunication Services

Older telecommunication services employ either analog phone lines, sometimes referred to as POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) or hard lines, or use PRI circuits which are digital T1 lines with 23 voice channels. VoIP delivers your voice communications across your existing Internet connection using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) Trunking. VoIP and SIP are more flexible than older technologies and allows easy expansion of services. Older telecommunications services are tethered to a physical location while SIP communications are virtual and can be easily moved. Analog and PRI communications lines are becoming obsolete technology as more and more businesses switch to VoIP.

VoIP Phone Advantages

The conversion from a legacy phone system to a Cloud PBX – VoIP Phone system provides many cost benefits but also many other benefits. The decision to ditch that old phone system should be on everyone’s mind and the decision should be sooner than later. VoIP is mainstream and you do not want to be stuck with a laggard telecommunication system. Here are some of the many benefits of RDI’s VoIP platform.

Cost Reductions

There is a lower cost of ownership with VoIP because when you sign up for RDI’s Cloud PBX – VoIP Platform, we will provide modern phones at no cost to you. You do not have long-distance usage costs because you receive unlimited domestic long-distance minutes. There is a lower cost of maintenance and repair. Cabling costs are lower as VoIP phones use the same cabling as data networks and desktop computers.

Flexibility and Scalability

Traditional or legacy phone systems are not as flexible as a VoIP based phone system.  A VoIP phone system is not physically connected to one physical site. It is in the Cloud. Multiple physical sites can be easily interconnected into one large platform and grow as your organizational needs increase.

Workforce Planning

Working from home and remote locations has become a requirement for many companies. Companies need to be sure they can hire the right people with the right skills and working from home is becoming a mainline trend. RDI’s VoIP phone system offers the flexibility and capabilities to solve those needs and keep up with the needs of your workforce.
